The Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association India said they will be halting elective services from Monday expressing solidarity with doctors protesting in Kolkata following the rape and murder of a trainee PG resident. FORDA has also urged other medical associations to extend support to the protest.

In a letter to the union health minister, the association urged the ministry to not view the protest lightly and “demand for justice and safety are met without further delay”. FORDA demanded that the government should expeditiously accept the demands made by resident doctors at  R.G. Kar Medical College. They demanded the right of doctors to peacefully protest must be respected and they must not be manhandled.

FORDA also demanded compensation must be provided to the kin of the trainee doctor and Centre should enforce a security protocol for healthcare workers. The association also demanded an expert committee must be formed to speed up ratifying the Central Healthcare Protection Act.

The victim, 31, was found dead on Friday morning around 7.30 am at the 3rd floor seminar hall of the hospital with multiple injuries. A judicial inquest has found injuries in the private parts while there was bleeding from both her eyes and mouth. Her collarbone was broken and injuries were found in her neck, belly and limbs.
