Sanjay Roy, who was arrested for the rape and murder of a lady doctor in Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College Hospital, was an alcoholic and porn addict, the police said. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the case that shocked the medical fraternity across India suspects that he was under the influence of alcohol while committing the crime on Friday morning, reports said.

The accused returned to his space to sleep after committing the crime on the third-floor seminar hall of the RG Kar Medical College Hospital. When he woke up in the morning, he washed his clothes to destroy evidence, the investigation team said. The 31-year-old lady doctor was sleeping after staying back to study when attacked by the accused Sanjay Roy.

Sanjay Roy, a Kolkata Police civic volunteer, was arrested at the KP's Welfare Cell and made enough connections to ensure he could stay at the hospital complex. The SIT had also confirmed that the 33-year-old confessed of having committed the crime. A case was filed against him under Section 64 (rape) and 103 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code.

According to the probe team, Roy is a widower who married four women. While his three wives left him over maniacal behaviour, the fourth passed away last year due to cancer, media reports quoted the officers as saying.

Meanwhile, protests by junior doctors demanding quick punishment of those responsible for the crime continued for the third day on Sunday, affecting services in government hospitals across West Bengal. RG Kar Medical College doctors alleged that the police have arrested only one accused, while many others could be involved in this heinous crime. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has demanded the completion of the investigation within 48 hours. Medicos will launch a nationwide strike otherwise, the association said.
