Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Independence Day speech at Red Fort, expressed his pain on the incidents of atrocities against women in the country, stating that society and state governments need to take the issue very seriously.

Stating that he could feel the outrage, Modi said: "I would like to express my pain again, from the Red Fort today. As a society, we will have to think seriously about the atrocities against women. There is outrage against this in the country and I can feel this. Speedy investigation of crimes against women and strict punishment for those executing these monstrous deeds are important to instil confidence in society."

The Prime Minister's statement comes as the country is shocked by the rape and murder of a woman doctor at a government hospital in Kolkata.

The Prime Minister said it was important to discuss rapes and incidents of atrocities against women. "But when a person of such monstrous tendency is punished, it is not seen in the news. It is restricted to a corner. Extensive discussion on those receiving punishment is necessary so that those committing this sin understand the severe punishment this can lead to. "Those who commit such sins should know that they will be hanged. It is important to have that fear. I think it is very important to instil this fear," Modi added.

He also used the platform to hail women's power in the country, stating that about 10 crore new women have joined self-help groups over the last decade. They have become integral to family decision-making, contributing to broader social change, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday.

He said the government has worked on a "women-led development model"in innovation, employment, and entrepreneurship. "Women are marching ahead in every sector," Modi said "Look at the defence sector -- air force, army navy, space sector, we are seeing the strength of women everywhere. But on the other hand, some disturbing things also come forward," he said.
