Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said the polling for the election to the 90-seat Jammu and Kashmir assembly will be held in three phases and the voting will conducted on September 18 for constituencies in first phase. He was accompanied by Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and Dr. Sandhu during the press conference to announce the poll schedule for J&K and Haryana.
Announcing the poll schedule for elections to various assemblies, Rajiv Kumar said there are 87.09 lakh electors in J&K, including 44.46 lakh male voters and 42.62 lakh female voters. Kumar added there are 3.71 lakh first-time voters. He added 11,800 polling booths will be set up in J&K and all basic amenities will be ensured at the polling booths.
The election will be held in three phases in J&K, Kumar said. He added voting will be held on September 18, September 25 and October 1 and the votes will be counted on October 4, CEC said. Kumar said the entire election process will be completed by October 6 in J&K.
The last assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir were held in 2014, leading to the formation of a coalition government by the PDP and the BJP. The coalition collapsed in 2018, and in 2019, the BJP initiated the move to abrogate Article 370, splitting Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
Haryana will go to polls on October 1 and counting will be conducted on October 4, coinciding with the third phase of polling in J&K. In Haryana, 20,629 polling stations will be set up for the polls, Kumar said.
