Even as the nation has erupted in protest against the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor in RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata, and the Indian Medical Association (IMA) called for a nationwide strike, the Centre urged people to trust the CBI which is probing the case.

The CBI is investigating the case, which has shocked the nation, under an order from the Calcutta High Court. The body of the trainee doctor was found in the seminar room of the hospital on August 9. Police arrested a civic volunteer in connection with the crime the next day.

Union minister Sukanta Majumdar said the investigating agency will perform the investigation properly on condition that the evidence at the crime scene is not tampered with.

"The CBI did not have the proof in their hands because it was there where the crime scene was. In murder and rape cases, there are biological remains. The longevity of the evidence decreases," news agency ANI quoted him as saying.

The CBI has reportedly identified 30 suspects and has started questioning them. The agency, on Friday, summoned a house staff member and two post-graduate trainees who were on duty with the doctor the night she was murdered.

The statement from the minister comes even as a two-member inquiry committee constituted by the National Commission for Women (NCW) that looked into the case submitted its preliminary findings on Friday, uncovering lapses in security, infrastructure, and investigation.

Meanwhile, the parents of the victim told the investigating agency that several interns and physicians from the hospital might be involved in the crime. "The parents told us that they suspect the involvement of multiple persons behind the sexual assault and murder of their daughter. They have given names of a few interns and doctors who worked with her at the hospital," a CBI officer has been quoted as saying.
