Even as doctors have been protesting against murder-rape of Kolkata junior doctor at RG Kar Hospital and urging authorities to increase security at health care centres, a female doctor doctor was allegedly assaulted by a patient and his intoxicated attendants at Mumbai's Sion hospital in the wee hours on Sunday.

The resident doctor was attacked by the patient around 3.30 am when she was on duty at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College and General Hospital, Sion.

He was brought to the hospital with injuries on his face, according to BMC MARD, which is an association of the resident doctors of all BMC medical colleges, including Sion, KEM, Nair and Cooper hospitals.

After his wounds were dressed in the casualty section, he was referred to the ENT ward. While the female doctor examined his face injuries, the man abused her verbally and threatened her as it caused him pain. Later there was a miscommunication between the doctor and the patient's relatives, following which around five to six of them allegedly attacked her.

The doctor was injured while trying to defend herself. The accused patient and his bystanders fled the scene after the incident.

An FIR was lodged at Sion Police Station based on the doctor's complaint.

Several doctors have staged protests and held candlelight marches after the murder and rape of 31-year-old postgraduate student of chest medicine in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The CBI has questioned more than 20 people including the hospital's former principal Sandip Ghosh and two police officers.
