Mother of Nirbhaya, the victim of the 2012 Delhi gang rape case, slammed the West Bengal government and politics over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a hospital in Kolkata and said Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee should resign.

Nirbhaya’s mother Asha Devi said in terms of women’s safety, things haven’t changed much after the 2012 Delhi gang rape case. She called the current situation in Kolkata unfortunate and politics over it. “Governments are accusing each other and holding protests instead of working on that case and women's safety,” she said.

Devi asked against whom is Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee protesting and the West Bengal CM failed to handle the situation. “Instead of using her authority to take action against the culprits, Mamata Banerjee is trying to mislead the public,” she said. Devi charged the West Bengal CM is protesting to divert public attention.

“She herself is a woman. She should have taken strict action against the culprits while discharging her responsibility as the head of the state. She should resign because she has failed to handle the situation," PTI reported quoting Devi. "When girls are not safe in Kolkata's medical college and such barbarity is committed against them, then one can understand the state of women's safety in the country," she added.

Devi said Nirbhaya’s name is remembered when such incidents happen, however, the situation hasn’t changed much.

The body of the 31-year-old postgraduate doctor was found inside a seminar hall of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on the morning of August 9. The incident has sparked nationwide protests and Kolkata police had arrested a civic volunteer the following day. However, the Calcutta High Court ordered a CBI probe into the case, saying no significant progress had been made in the investigation by the police.
