Amid allegations of conspiracy in the Kolkata rape-murder case, former National Commission of Women (NCW) Rekha Sharma expressed doubts about the involvement of more than one person in the crime. The Kolkata Police has so far only arrested one person, civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, in the case.

However, according to Sharma, there could be more than one accused. "It does not seem that this is the work of one person; there are others involved whom Mamata Banerjee wants to protect. Now that the case is with the CBI, a full investigation will reveal what she was trying to conceal," Rekha Sharma told ANI.

Sharma had earlier targeted the West Bengal chief minister for failing to provide security to women. "If a woman is not safe at her workplace, where will she be safe?" she said, alleging that the West Bengal government was failing to protect the women in the state.

Meanwhile, a team of CBI sleuths began tracing the whereabouts of the accused on the day of the crime and whether he was inebriated while committing the crime.

Local media reports quoting CBI sources said Sanjay Roy had gone to Salua in West Midnipur to attend a meeting of the Police Welfare Committee on the day of the incident. He returned to Kolkata soon after and went straight to the red-light area at Kalighat. He came back to the R G Kar Hospital but didn't stay for long. He then went back to Sonagachi with another man. Both spent some time in the red-light area where they consumed alcohol.

He returned to the hospital and reached the seminar hall, where he allegedly committed the crime. The accused was caught on the CCTV camera near the seminar hall around 4 am.

The body of the 31-year-old postgraduate doctor was found inside a seminar hall of the state-run hospital on the morning of August 9.

Roy joined the force as a civic volunteer in 2019 and is said to have gotten close to a few senior police officers over the years following which he was moved to the Kolkata Police Welfare Board and posted at the police outpost at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The CBI is also planning to conduct a psychological assessment of Sanjay Roy and a team of psychological and behavioural analysts from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Delhi has arrived in Kolkata to conduct the necessary tests.
