The CBI, investigating the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee woman doctor at Kolkata's R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, has reportedly prepared a list of 40 people whom they plan to question in connection with the case. This includes doctors and police officials.

The last two days saw the investigating agency grilling the former principal of the medical college, Dr Sandip Ghosh, for the second consecutive day. He was first summoned to the  CBI office at the CGO complex in Salt Lake on Friday before being summoned again on Saturday around 10:30 am. He was grilled for over 13 hours, according to local media, and left the CBI office premises only around 11 pm.

There are reports that he may be asked to appear before the CBI sources again on Sunday morning.

Ghosh was reportedly asked about his whereabouts on the night when the crime happened. He was also grilled about who informed him about the murder and his primary reaction to it, the officials told PTI. He was also asked to explain whom he assigned to inform the victim's family about the incident.

"Certain answers were convoluted. He was grilled till early Saturday and then allowed to leave for home before he was asked to appear again," a CBI officer told PTI.

He was also asked about the weekly roster of the chest medicine department where the victim was seen to be put on duty for a gruelling 36 hours at a stretch or, at times, even 48 hours.

Dr Ghosh has approached Calcutta High Court seeking protection alleging that his life was in danger. The court has directed the State to ensure that Ghosh is protected.

The CBI has prepared a list of 40 people to be questioned in connection with the case, of which 20 have already been summoned. A couple of psychologists from New Delhi also arrived in Kolkata on Saturday to take part in the questioning.

The sleuths also visited the crime scene at the RG Kar hospital and the barrack of the Kolkata Police's Armed Forces fourth battalion in Salt Lake, where the arrested prime accused, civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, was putting up.

The team also visited Roy's residence at Sambhunath Pandit Street in South Kolkata. They are trying to piece together information on whether the accused was inebriated when he returned home after the crime and how he behaved when the Kolkata Police arrested him.

The CBI team spoke to the accused's mother about his recent whereabouts and recorded her written statement. "We are trying to draw a map of all those places where he had been to on that day. We are also trying to talk to his friends, doctors and police officers who know him," the officer said.
