The BJP’s fresh membership drive will allow new members to join the party through QR codes, the NaMo app, missed call and the party’s website.

The drive, which will be launched on September 1, will also have a special focus on slums and Dalit settlements. Workers have been asked to visit these and make people aware of the party’s achievements and schemes at the state and the central level.

The party’s aim is to get ‘at least’ 200 members from every booth, said Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Aidtyanath. He was speaking at a meeting of party functionaries and leaders at Lucknow on Tuesday evening. In addition, MPs have a target of 20,000 and MLAs/MLCs of 10,000. By the party’s own calculation this works out to a total of 3.25 lakh new members in the state. There are 1.63 lakh booths in the state.

Targets for state level office bearers are five thousand; one thousand for district level ones and corporators will have to ensure 500 new joinees in the party.

In addition, various wings of the party have also been given targets at the national level. The Yuva Morcha for instance has to rope in 20 lakh members; the OBC and Kisan morchas 10 lakh each while the women’s morcha is expected to get 15 lakh members.

The party’s aim is not just to get new members but also to expand its organisation upwards from the village level.

In preparation for this, there will be workshops in all districts from August 22 to 24. On August 31, there will be a membership drive at every booth.

Special sections of society will also be targeted on significant days for membership. Thus, on September 5 (Teachers’ Day), the drive will focus on enrolling teachers in the party.

It is significant that both the state’s deputy chief ministers were present at the meeting. Brajesh Pathak said, “We will have to go to people and listen to them”.

Keshav Prasad Maurya said, “We are not bigger than the party or the country…we have to keep our connections alive”. He also extolled attendees to go all out for the country and the party.
