Amid widespread protests over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, came another disturbing incident in Kolkata, where a Bengali actor was 'attacked' by a biker on a city road.
In a video posted on social media, Bengali actor Payel Mukherjee said she was allegedly heckled by a biker while driving her car on Friday night.
A teary-eyed Payel said that a youth stopped his bike before her SUV on Southern Avenue and asked her to come out of the vehicle, and when she refused, he banged on the car window and broke it, injuring her hand.
Locals rescued her and the police detained the man following Payel's complaint.
Though the man claimed Payel's car grazed his bike, the actor denied the incident. The man later apologised to the police for the incident.
"I don't know where we stand now. If a woman can be accosted and heckled in such a way in a crowded street at evening that exemplifies the real situation. And this happens amid rallies taken out all over the city on the issue of women's safety," Payel said in Bangla.
"I shudder to think what would have happened to me had this incident taken place in a deserted spot," she added.
BJP slams Mamata Banerjee-led state government
The BJP, which is in opposition in West Bengal, criticised the state government for making Kolkata a “nightmare for women”.
