INDIA bloc has been demanding govt to conduct caste-based census

Congress took a jibe at Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday over the delay in conducting the population census and said it is already delayed by three years.

Congress Communications Secretary Jairam Ramesh said in a post on X, “The self-styled Chanakya has just dropped a bombshell. Yesterday, in Chhattisgarh, he let out a top secret. He said that the Census will be carried out at an appropriate time and that an announcement will be made for it when it is decided.” Ramesh added, “Such clarity on a Census that has already been delayed for over 3 years!”

Congress jibe comes a day after Shah said the decadal census exercise would be carried out at an appropriate time. Addressing presspersons at Raipur on Saturday, Shah said, "The census will be carried out at an appropriate time. We will make an announcement for it when it is decided,” PTI reported.

The opposition has been demanding the government to conduct the decadal census and it should also include caste census as part of it. Caste-based census was the opposition INDIA bloc’s key poll plank during the recently held Lok Sabha elections.

The house listing phase of the census and the exercise to update the National Population Register was scheduled to be carried out across the country from April 1 to September 30, 2020, but it was postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak, PTI reported.
