The Enforcement Directorate has registered a money laundering case in connection with alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The ED’s case stems from an FIR registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation against Ghosh over similar charges.

Based on the directions of the Calcutta High Court, the Central Bureau of Investigation had recently taken over the probe into the financial irregularities at the hospital along with the probe over the death and murder of a trainee doctor at the hospital in Kolkata. On Sunday, the central agency had conducted searches at 14 locations including Ghosh’s residence and had reportedly seized several documents from Ghosh’s residence.

Besides Ghosh, the CBI has accused a few other contractors in its FIR registered on the basis of a complaint from the state's health secretary. The CBI has slapped charges under sections 120B, section 420 and Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act for criminal conspiracy, cheating and for unlawful acceptance of gratification by a public servant.

The probe into financial irregularities at the hospital was launched after Akhtar Ali, former deputy superintendent of the hospital lodged a complaint accusing Ghosh and his associates of awarding tenders violating regulations.

Ghosh and his associates had issued tenders for the construction of food stalls, cafes, canteens, and urinals without the permission of the health department and the college council, Ali charged in his complaint. Initial probe revealed that three traders got these "illegal" tenders, a CBI officer said.

A postgraduate trainee woman doctor was allegedly raped and murdered in the seminar hall of the hospital on August 9, following which a Kolkata Police civic volunteer was arrested. The gruesome crime resulted in nationwide protests by doctors and citizens.
