The Indian Medical Association on Wednesday suspended the membership of Dr Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar medical college hospital, where a junior doctor was raped and murdered earlier this month.

Ghosh, who is the vice president of the association's Kolkata branch, is accused of negligence in reporting the rape-murder incident to the police and is also facing charges of corruption in a separate case.

The decision to suspend Ghosh was taken by the IMA’s disciplinary committee, which suo-motu considered the rape and murder case of the postgraduate resident doctor and the subsequent developments at the RG Kar hospital.

IMA national president Dr R.V. Asokan and other officials of the association had met the victim’s parents at their home.

"They (the victim's family) had put up their grievances against you (Ghosh) in dealing with the situation as well as lack of empathy and sensitivity in handling the issue in an appropriate manner befitting the responsibility held by you in your dealings with them," the order said.

"The IMA Bengal state branch as well as certain associations' of doctors also have demanded action citing the nature of disrepute brought by you to the profession on the whole," it said.

The CBI, which is probing the case, has questioned Ghosh multiple times and also carried out an extensive search of his house in Kolkata.

The CBI team is also monitoring the call details of Ghosh and the initial probe hints that he made a long phone call to "someone influential" on the day the woman doctor was found dead.

Ghosh resigned from his post days after the incident, taking moral responsibility, but within hours the West Bengal government appointed him as the principal of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital. The government’s move sparked a fresh wave of protests, prompting the Calcutta High Court to intervene and send him on “long leave”.
