“Turn the pages… the history of the Samajwadi Party is filled with black deeds.”

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's barb at the SP comes ahead of the byelections in the state.

Sisamau in Kanpur is one of the assembly seats which will be up for grabs. The seat fell vacant after Irfan Solanki, the sitting MLA from the SP, was sentenced to seven years imprisonment for harassing a woman and setting her house on fire. Sisamau is an SP stronghold. One of the most influential ministers in the UP cabinet - Suresh Khanna - has been given the responsibility to win the seat for the party.

Adityanath said that Sisamau was facing elections because of the misdeeds of the SP. He was in Kanpur today to announce a slew of development projects worth Rs 7,500 crore. But he made sure to draw people's attention to Solanki, who, he said, was supported by his party president Akhilesh Yadav.

He said that people from the SP grab the property of the poor and incite riots, and that the party never lets go of the opportunity to unleash anarchy.

“Samajwadi Party’s cap is red, but their exploits are black. Before 2017 (when the SP was in power), UP was in need of an identity as it was known for anarchy and hooliganism,” Adityanath said. “No one wanted to come to the state, the youth used to leave UP; they were facing an identity crisis. Uttar Pradesh now decides the model of development, good governance and law and order.”

Adityanath also took on the Congress, saying that the closure of the Lal Imli mill was a testimony to the party’s dishonesty and corruption. The textile mill, which produced high quality woollen goods, had been set up in 1869. Once part of the set-up which had given Kanpur the title of ‘Manchester of the East’, it is now barely operational. He said his government was working on a revival package for the mill.
