An elderly man was allegedly slapped and abused inside an express train by a group of men on suspicion that he was carrying beef in Maharashtra’s Nashik district.

A video of the incident, which took place earlier this week, has gone viral on social media, prompting the Government Railway Police (GRP) to initiate a probe.

The video shows at least a dozen people assaulting and verbally abusing the man, identified as Haji Ashraf Munyar, a resident of Jalgaon district.

According to police, Munyar was travelling to his daughter's house in Kalyan when he was allegedly beaten up by the co-passengers near Igatpuri.

"We have taken cognisance of the video and identified the victim. Some of the people involved in the attack have also been identified, and a probe is on," an officer told PTI.

The police has not yet filed any case in connection with the incident.

Meanwhile, in another incident, five persons were arrested in Haryana after a migrant worker from West Bengal was beaten to death over suspicion that he had eaten beef.

Sabir Malik, the victim, was killed on August 27. The accused have been identified as Abhishek, Mohit, Ravinder, Kamaljit and Sahil—who all are part of a cow vigilante group.

Police said two juveniles have also been apprehended in the matter.
