West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said the various evidence in the Kolkata trainee doctor rape and murder case were shown to the victim’s parents. Mamata, addressing the state assembly during the discussion on the anti-rape Bill, said the Central Bureau of Investigation should ensure death penalty for the accused in the case.

Mamata said the parents of the victim in the Kolkata trainee doctor rape and murder case were shown the CCTV footage and other audio-visual evidence ahead of her visit on August 12 so that the parents were aware of the probe progress in the case. The 31-year-old trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

“The lady doctor died on August 9. I spoke to the parents of the deceased on the same day the incident happened. Before going to their house, they were given all the audio, video and CCTV footage so that they know everything. I clearly told them to give me time till Sunday and if we are not able to arrest everyone by then, I will hand over the probe to the CBI on Monday,” ANI reported quoting Mamata.

The Trinamool Congress chief said the key accused in the case was arrested within 12 hours and she directed police to approach fast-track court for trial. Mamata added she had directed police to seek death penalty for the accused in the case but the case got transferred to the CBI by then. “Now we are demanding justice from CBI. We have been demanding death penalty for the accused from the beginning,” she said.

Mamata demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and chief ministers of the BJP-ruled states for failing to pass stringent laws for safeguarding women. She also demanded that the governor should accord assent to the Bill without delay.

The West Bengal Assembly on Tuesday unanimously passed the Aparajita Woman and Child (West Bengal Criminal Laws and Amendment) Bill 2024. The Bill was passed aiming faster justice delivery and enhanced punishment for the guilty, she said.
