Kolkata rape-murder: 200 people questioned by CBI but 'conflicting statements' pose trouble

The statement given by Kolkata rape murder accused Sanjay Roy is inconsistent with the findings of the CBI

CBI officials at RG Kar Medical College CBI officials conduct investigation in connection with the alleged sexual assault and murder of a trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, in Kolkata | Salil Bera

Almost a month after the body of the trainee doctor was found in the seminar hall of Kolkata's R G Kar Medical College Hospital, the controversy surrounding the rape-murder incident has only intensified. Amid accusations by the victim's parents that the Kolkata Police tried to cover up the incident, the CBI investigation too has reached a critical juncture.

The CBI has so far questioned 200 people in connection with the rape and murder, but there are conflicting statements about the incidents that happened on the fateful day, reported Anandabazar Patrika.

The report quoting an unnamed CBI official said that the interrogation revealed multiple versions of the incident with regard to what the doctor ate that night and who ordered it etc. The official added that the report submitted before the Supreme Court has all this information. "The videography footage of the post-mortem and the statements obtained during the interrogation are one of the mainstays of this investigation. There is inconsistency. We will examine every frame of the footage in the forensic lab if necessary," he said, adding that the probe will require more time.

Even the accused Sanjay Roy's statement is inconsistent with the CBI investigation. What Sanjay claimed in the polygraph test was also different from the statement he gave to the Kolkata Police. The probe is also focused on the injuries of the deceased and whether the victim tried to resist the accused.

Sanjay will be produced in the court of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate of Sealdah Court on Friday.

Row over video

The victim's parents have alleged a bid to cover up the incident by the Kolkata police while taking part in a protest on Wednesday. The parents alleged that the police tried to bribe them.

However, a new video surfaced on Thursday which showed the parents claiming to be satisfied by the investigation carried out by the Kolkata Police. The family was quick to respond, claiming that the video was forcibly recorded by the police just after the cremation.

The TMC raised the matter of the video in a press meet with minister Shashi Panja citing that the new video of the parents claimed that the allegations of cover-up were false. "A video went viral yesterday where it is claimed that a police official offered money to the parents in the aftermath of the incident. Another video has appeared in the public domain, where the parents clearly stated that such claims are lies and they only want justice for their daughter," she said.

The TMC leader also played the video during the press conference at the TMC office, where the parents were heard saying that they were never offered money.

"There shouldn't be politics here. We want to humbly appeal that there should be no political pressure on the parents to do anything," Panja said.

However, a close relative of the victim's family said the video was shot forcibly by the police days after the incident. "The video was shot by the police just days after the incident took place and we were forced to participate. The truth is that the police tried to hush up the case and attempted to protect (former) RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh," a family member told the news channel.
