The Central Bureau of Investigation probing the Kolkata trainee doctor rape and murder case has reportedly ruled out gang-rape as DNA test suggest only Sanjay Roy was involved in the horrific crime. The central agency is also probing possible tampering of crime scene as construction works were carried out at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital a day after the incident came to light.
According to reports, Sanjay Roy’s DNA has matched samples collected from the victim’s body and evidence suggest he was lone accused in the case. Earlier, the central agency had collected technical and scientific evidence which corroborated Roy’s presence at the seminar hall in the hospital where the victim doctor was found dead.
The CBI investigation has reached a critical juncture. The CBI has so far questioned 200 people in connection with the rape and murder. However, there are conflicting statements about the incidents that happened on the fateful day. The central agency is working on preparing a watertight charge-sheet in the case.
The 31-year-old junior doctor was raped and murdered while on duty and her body was discovered at the seminar hall on the third floor of the hospital on August 9. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer was arrested the following day.
Meanwhile, the CBI is also probing whether the crime scene was tampered after the incident. Telegraph India reported that the CBI team have visited the crime scene and a 3D videography of the crime scene was done for a better understanding of the incident site. Sandip Ghosh, former principal of the hospital had written to state’s Public Works Department a day after the incident, urging them to take immediate steps to renovate on-duty doctors’ toilets and rooms. However, the construction works were halted after the Calcutta High Court intervened.
As per the postmortem examination report, the victim died due to "manual strangulation associated with smothering". The report added that she had 16 external and nine internal injury marks."There is medical evidence of forceful penetration/insertion in her genitalia the possibility of sexual assault," the report also stated. There were abrasions on her cheeks, lips, nose, neck, arms and knees, it said adding that there were injuries to her private parts. The report, which specified "all injuries are antemortem, listed nine internal wounds, including those in the muscles of the scalp, neck and other parts of the body.
