Authorities at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have issued notice to 51 doctors and staff for allegedly promoting a “culture of intimidation” in the campus. The doctors have been asked to appear before an inquiry committee on Wednesday.

Interestingly, the notice comes hours before the Supreme Court’s ultimatum for protesting doctors to resume work ends.

Authorities at the RG Kar Hospital have issued notice to MBBS students, senior resident doctors and house staff for reportedly intimidating others in their respective departments. Reportedly, emboldened by recent probe by central agencies into financial irregularities at the hospital, authorities have initiated action against this group of students and staff based on complaint from resident doctors’ association at the hospital.

The decision to summon the doctors for inquiry was taken at a special council meeting conducted on Monday, Indian Express reported. “There had been complaints against this section of doctors and students for intimidating and threatening other junior doctors, students and house staff like us. Some were close to the former principal and wielded enormous power inside the campus. Out of fear, many of us were forced to accept their torture. However, now the authorities have started to take some kind of action. Let us see what finally happens,” a protesting junior doctor told the publication.

Reportedly, those summoned include two senior resident doctors, one medical research scientist, 20 house staff, 11 interns and MBBS students. The institution has restricted them from entering campus, unless summoned by the Enquiry Committee, and they have been barred from participating in college activities.
