Nagpur police on Tuesday said the driver of BJP state president’s son Sanket Bawankule’s car, which was involved in a series of collisions on Monday, was arrested and released on bail. Police further said the registration plates were present on the car, refuting claims that they were removed following the accident.

Rahul Madane, Deputy Police Commissioner said the accident occurred during the early hours of Monday and the Audi car hit against another car and a two-wheeler. However, none of the passengers suffered severe injuries, police said.

Police said the Audi was registered in the name of Sanket Bawankule, son of Bharatiya Janata party’s State President Chandrashekhar Bawankule. According to police,  Arjun Hawre, the driver, Sanket Bawankule and his friend Ronit Chittamwar were present in the vehicle at the time of the accident.

“We have questioned all the three occupants of the car. We arrested the driver, Arjun, but he was later granted bail as it was a bailable offence. Their medical samples have been sent to FSL and report is awaited. When we examined the vehicle, its number plates were there in it,” Madane said. He added Bawankule has confessed to police that he was in the car.

The Audi car owned by the BJP leader’s son hit several vehicles in the Ramdaspeth area during the early hours of Monday and police nabbed Arjun and Ronit Chittamwar soon after the incident. Reportedly, the trio were returning from a beer bar in Dharampeth when the accident took place.

Police said CCTV footage is being checked to ascertain the chain of events.

BJP leader Chandrashekhar Bawankule admitted the Audi car was registered in the name of his son Sanket and unbiased probe must be conducted. "Police should conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the accident without any bias. Those found guilty should be charged and appropriate action should be taken against them. I have not spoken to any police official. The law must be equal for all," PTI reported quoting Chandrashekhar.
