Congress leader Rahul Gandhi lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party government in Madhya Pradesh and said the attack on trainee Army officials and rape of their woman friend was a shame to the entire society. Rahul said the negative attitude of the BJP government towards crimes against women is “extremely worrying”.

Rahul, who is in the US, condemned the incident and tweeted, “The violence against two army soldiers and the rape of their female companion in Madhya Pradesh is enough to shame the entire society. Law and order in BJP-ruled states is almost non-existent - and, the negative attitude of BJP Government towards the day-by-day increasing crimes against women is extremely worrying.”

The Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha charged audacity of the criminals as a result of the total failure of the administration. “Both the society and the government should be ashamed and think seriously – how long will they turn a blind eye to the responsibility of protecting half the population of the country!” he added.

A gang of armed men waylaid and attacked two trainee Army officials and raped their woman friend in Madhya Pradesh's Indore district on Wednesday. The incident happened when the officers and their two women friends were out on a picnic at the historic Jam Gate, 50km from Indore, in the wee hours of Wednesday.

According to the police, the officers were undergoing the Young Officers (YO) course at the Infantry School in Mhow cantonment town. The 23-year-old officials left for a night drive with their female friends around 2 am on Wednesday when a gang of criminals waylaid them near a picnic spot on Mhow-Mandleshwar road.

The gang of seven men began assaulting one of the officers sitting in a car and the women. The second officer, who was away from the car, immediately alerted his seniors and the police. The miscreants fled after the police arrived. Further medical examination revealed the woman was raped by the miscreants while the man had signs of injury on his body.

"A case under (BNS) sections pertaining to loot, dacoity, rape and under the Arms Act has been registered," Indore Rural SP Hitika Vasal told reporters. The investigation is being carried out by 10 police teams. All six suspects have been identified and two of whom have been detained. "Efforts are underway to nab the remaining four. They will be caught at the earliest. The women's statement is yet to be recorded, once it happens further action will be taken," she added.
