Amidst undying resentment against the West Bengal government over the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien questioned delay by CBI in the case’s probe.

Derek questioned why hasn’t the Central Bureau of Investigation filed a charge-sheet in the case yet. “How long will the RG Kar victim’s family have to wait for justice? Supreme C (Court) is monitoring the case; CBI has the accused & all the evidence. Why is it not filing a charge-sheet & starting trial?” he asked.

The parliamentarian urged swift justice must be ensured for the victim in the case and questioned delay in beginning the trial. “We all want swift justice. Why is CBI delaying the trial? We need answers,” he said in a post on X.

Derek’s comments comes as the Kolkata government is figuring out ways to convince protesting junior doctors to resume work. In a dramatic statement on Thursday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said she was ready to resign in the larger interest of the people. Mamata offered to resign after a delegation of junior doctors refused to attend a meeting called by her over difference of opinion on live-streaming the entire proceedings.

Ever since the CBI took over RG Kar rape-murder case probe, the Trinamool Congress have been protesting demanding speedy trial and death penalty for accused in the case.

Junior doctors have been protesting across West Bengal for close to a month following the rape and murder of the trainee doctor. The 31-year-old junior doctor was raped and murdered while on duty and her body was discovered at the seminar hall on the third floor of the hospital on August 9. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer at the hospital was arrested the following day.
