CBI gets three-day custody of ex-RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh, cop Abhijit Mondal in Kolkata rape-murder case

Abhijit Mondal was arrested for allegedly delaying registering FIR and tampering evidence in the rape-murder case

A Kolkata Court granted Central Bureau of Investigation three-day custody of former RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Principal Sandip Ghosh and senior police officer Abhijit Mondal in connection with probe into the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the hospital.

The Sealdah ACJM granted the central agency custody of the accused till September 17. CBI arrested Ghosh and senior cop Abhijit Mondal in connection with the rape and murder case on Saturday. Ghosh is already serving remand in connection with RG MCH financial irregularities case.

Mondal, who was Tala police station in-charge at the time of the incident was arrested by CBI allegedly for tampering with evidence and for delaying registration of FIR. “Mondal was arrested for allegedly tampering evidence and delay in registering the FIR among other charges,” a CBI officer told PTI. The RG Kar Medical College and Hospital is under the jurisdiction of Tala Police Station.

Mondal was arrested after he failed to provide satisfying answers during questioning on Saturday, the officer said. According to the CBI, both Ghosh and Mondal were in touch with each other, and allegedly, Ghosh issued instructions to the policeman on how to proceed with the rape and murder case.

According to the central agency, Mondal was informed about the death of the doctor around 10am on August 9, but the FIR was lodged only around 11pm. “Both of them tried to downplay the incident as well as shield the heinous crime,” CBI said.

The 31-year-old junior doctor was raped and murdered while on duty and her body was discovered at the seminar hall on August 9. A civic volunteer Sanjay Roy was arrested in connection with the case following day. The Calcutta High Court transferred probe from state police to CBI following lapses in former’s probe.
