The crime came to light after locals notified the Bengaluru Police of foul smell emenatimg from the apartment. When a team of cops enetered the flat and launched a search, the body of the woman was found cut into pieces and stored inside the refridgerator. The body was stuffed into the fridge after being cut into thirty pieces, the police team found out.

Although the home appliance was switched on and running, the body parts of the victim were in bad condition and infested by maggots. The identity of the late victim was identified as 28-year-old Mahalekshmi, Hindustan Times said in a report.

Bengaluru Additional Commissioner of Police (West Zone) N Satheesh told reporters that Mahalekshmi was a migrant worker who settled down in Karnataka some time ago. Confirming that a thorough investigation is on, the police official said there were limitations in revealing more information at the time. A dog squad, a fingerprint team, and a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) unit were summoned to the crime scene to gather evidence.

The incident was a stark reminder of the brutal murder of Shraddha Walker by her live-in partner Aftab Poonawalla on May 18, 2022 at Mehrauli in Delhi.

Twenty-eight-year-old Poonawala allegedly strangled Walkar and sawed her body into 35 pieces which he kept in a 300-litre fridge for almost three weeks at his residence before dumping them across the city.
