Amethi Police, which is investigating the murders, said Sunil's wife Poonam Bharti had filed a complaint against a man named Chandan Verma of molestation, assault and use of casteist slur under the SC/ST Act in Raebareli police station on August 18.

She had also mentioned in the complaint that "if anything happens to her or her family", then the accused, Verma, should be held responsible. However, the police are yet to confirm whether or not the murders are related to the FIR.

Neighbours told police that upon hearing loud gunshots, they reached the house to find the family dead on the back side.

Meanwhile, the incident has triggered a widespread anger and shock in the area. Amethi MP and Congress leader Kishori Lal Sharma lashed out against the Yogi government, stating this reflected the state's law and order situation.

"Hearing about this heart-rending incident sent shivers down the spine. The entire Amethi family is as upset as they are angry. This mass murder is the result of the government's ruined law and order situation. The criminals are fearless. The police administration should immediately arrest the criminals and give them the harshest punishment," Sharma wrote on X
