The key accused behind the cold-blooded murder of four of a family, including two children, in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi was arrested by the police on Friday. The accused was identified as Chandan Verma by the UP Police.
A Dalit school teacher, his wife and two young children were shot dead at their rented home in Amethi. The assailants barged into the house of Sunil Kumar (35)—an assistant teacher at the Composite School in Panhauna—at Bhawani Nagar crossroads and opened fire at him, his wife Poonam (32) and two children, aged 5 and 2. All four were rushed to the hospital where doctors declared them dead on arrival. The unsuspecting family is believed to have opened the door of their house for the assailants after they knocked with loaded guns.

The motive behind the brutal crime remained unknown. The arrest of Chandan Verma is expected to help UP Police crack the case. Even legal disputes involving Sunil Kumar are being probed, reported India Today, as robbery was ruled out following the murder. However, Superintendent of Police Anoop Kumar Singh had earlier told news agency PTI that Poonam had filed a cae against Verma in Rae Bareli on August 18, accusing him of eve-teasing. An FIR was lodged against him under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Actunder the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Meanwhile, the investigation team also found out that Verma had posted a WhatsApp status stating that "five people will die, I will show you soon." The cops suspect that the accused wanted to kill himself after eliminating the four-member family, taking the total toll to five.
