The key accused in the Amethi Dalit family murder case was shot by police during the early hours of Saturday while recovering the weapon used to wipe out four of a family, including two kids. The accused Chandan Verma was shot in his leg while he tried to snatch the sub-inspector’s gun, police said.
According to police, Chandan Verma, the key accused in the case was being taken near canal track to recover the pistol and magazine used for the murder. A team from Shivratanganj Police Station had taken Verma there to recover the weapon.
“Just when Singh was inspecting the pistol and its magazine, Chandan Verma, the accused, snatched Singh's gun from his holster and fired at him intending to kill him. In defence, Inspector Sachchidanand Rai fired a gunshot which hit Verma in his right leg,” police said in a statement.
On Thursday, Sunil Kumar (35), an assistant teacher at the Composite School in Panhauna, his wife Poonamand two children aged 5 and 2 were shot dead allegedly by Verma, at their residence in Bhawani Nagar. Police arrested Verma on Friday night, near a toll plaza in Noida, while he was trying to flee to Delhi.
Verma allegedly told police that he was in relationship with Poonam for over a year and he planned to murder the family after the relationship went sour. Meanwhile, details have emerged that Poonam had complained against Verma to police less than two months ago. Poonam in her complaint said Verma had sexually harassed her and then slapped her and her husband when she protested at a hospital in Rae Bareli, NDTV reported.
Amethi Superintendent of Police Anoop Kumar Singh said Chandan Verma carried out the murders alone and was planning to kill himself after the murder. Police have seized a country-made pistol and a black Enfiled Bullet used in the crime. Verma was sent to Tiloi Community Health Centre for treatment, police said.
