Kerala MLA PV Anvar says his new outfit, Democratic Movement of Kerala (DMK), is not a political party but a secular social organisation. The organisation was formed with the blessings of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (also DMK) after the lawmaker met with its leaders in Chennai last week.

Anvar will make an official announcement about his outfit during a public event in Manjeri on Sunday evening. It will be attended by DMK leaders from Tamil Nadu. He told Manorama News that he sought DMK support for his new organisation because of its strong secular values.

However, reports say that being an Independent MLA from Nilambur, he could be disqualified if he joins a new party. He cannot join an existing party or form a new party of his own during the five-year term. However, he said he is ready to overcome legal challenges by resigning his MLA post.

This comes after Anvar accused ADGP (Law and Order) M.R. Ajith Kumar of disrupting Thrissur Pooram ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. He also alleged that  Kumar and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's political secretary P. Sasi are involved in gold smuggling and other illegal activities.

Following this, the CM spoke against Anvar, which prompted him to quit the ruling coalition, Left Democratic Front (LDF), led by the CPI(M). He said he would not join the UDF and preferred to sit in the middle during Assembly sessions. However, the Speaker moved his seat to the opposition row behind UDF MLAs.

He then met the leaders of MK Stalin-led DMK to discuss working together and is expected to launch his Democratic Movement of Kerala on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has clarified its stance on Anvar, saying it has the same position as the United Democratic Front (UDF), the opposition alliance led by the Congress.
