The BJP looks set for a consecutive third term in Haryana, as counting trends in the Haryana assembly elections 2024 shows the ruling party, under the leadership of incumbent Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, is leading in 49 seats in the 90-seat assembly.

With the saffron party crossing the majority mark, the state and the national leadership can heave a sigh of relief, as they seem to have overcome anti-incumbency and the public mood against the incumbent government over the controversial farm laws and Agniveer scheme.

Ahead of the Haryana assembly polls, the BJP had tried to put its house in order by replacing Manohar Lal Khattar, who resigned as the CM in March, with Saini, who is an OBC leader. Khattar was under fire for his handling of the wrestler protests, and agitations over quotas and farm laws.

A week ahead of the polls, BJP was forced to expel eight party leaders over their decision to contest the Haryana assembly polls as independents. Former Haryana minister Ranjit Singh Chautala was among those who were shown the door for six years with immediate effect. Chautala was denied the ticket from Rania, the seat he represented in the assembly when he was an independent MLA. Chautala quit as MLA before joining the BJP ahead of the Lok Sabha polls earlier this year. But he lost the parliamentary polls from Hisar.
