Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party leader and former Haryana minister Anil Vij is trailing in his stronghold seat Amabala Cantonment by less than 600 votes as per early trends. As counting has completed six rounds, independent candidate Chitra Sarwara is leading against Vij.
As per election commission results, at the end of six rounds of counting, Congress rebel and independent candidate Sarwara is leading against Vij by a margin of 545 votes. Sarwara has polled 20,443 votes while Vij is trailing and has polled 19,898 votes. Congress candidate Parviner Pal Pari is distant third and has polled only 7,227 votes. As per trends in first six rounds of counting, Sarwara has been maintaining slight lead over Vij.
Chitra Sarwara, daughter of former Congress Minister Nirmal Singh, decide to contest the election as an independent candidate after the Congress denied her ticket in the Haryana Assembly polls.
Anil Vij, the BJP veteran, has won consecutively from Ambala Cantonment for six times since 2009. He is hoping for a consecutive seventh win this election.
The BJP has crossed the halfway mark in the election to the 90-seat Haryana assembly and it is leading in 49 seats. The Congress is leading in 35 seats and independents are leading in four seats.
The exit polls predicted a victory for Congress. If this happens, Bhupinder Singh Hooda is likely to become the next chief minister of Haryana. But the BJP government led by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has claimed it will form the government with full majority.
