Dr Saibaba, a champion of tribal rights and critic of government regression, was jailed for his alleged maoist links. He spent about 10 years behind bars at the Nagpur Central Jail after he was booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for having alleged maoist links.

A sessions court in 2017 convicted Saibaba and five others, including a journalist and a Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student, for alleged Maoist links and for indulging in activities amounting to waging war against the country. Saibaba was accused of arranging a meeting of the other accused with members of the banned CPI (Maoist). He was released in March this year after Bombay High Court acquitted him in the case.

The former professor taught English at Ram Lal Anand College of Delhi University. He was terminated from service by the DU and his official accommodation was taken away after he was arrested in 2014, PTI reported.
