Of the nine seats in Uttar Pradesh where bypolls will be held on November 13, four were with the Samajwadi Party, three with the BJP and one each with the NISHAD Party and the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD). The last three parties are allies this time round.
Among these seats, the Samajwadi Party posted its best performance in Karhal, from which former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav polled more than 60 per cent of the votes, beating his nearest rival S.P. Singh Baghel of the BJP with almost 33 per cent of the votes. The seat fell vacant after Yadav’s election to the Lok Sabha from Kannauj.
From Katehri, the SP candidate Lalji Varma had more than 37 per cent of the votes while the runner-up was Avadhesh Kumar of the NISHAD Party who came close with almost 35 per cent of the votes polled. This is one of the seats that the NISHAD Party is eyeing. Varma is now an MP from Ambedkar Nagar.
In Kundarki, the SP candidate Zia Ur Rehman had registered an emphatic win with 46 per cent of the votes while trailing in second place was the BJP candidate who got 30 per cent of the votes. Rehman has now been elected MP from Sambhal.
Haji Irfan Solanki of the SP had won the Sisamau seat with more than 50 per cent of the votes while in second place was the BJP with almost 43 per cent of the votes. This seat has fallen vacant as Solanki is currently undergoing a prison sentence.
Khair was won by BJP’s Anoop Singh who polled more than 55 per cent of all the votes. The party in second position was BSP. The seat fell vacant because Singh is now MP from Hathras.
Ghaziabad was also a seat that went to the BJP with its candidate Atul Garg polling more than 61 per cent of the votes. Garg is now an MP from the constituency. In second position with 18 per cent of the votes was the Samajwadi Party.
Phulpur, the third seat won by the BJP saw a very keen contest with the Samajwadi Party polling almost 41 per cent of the votes against the BJP’s Praveen Patel who got 42 per cent of the votes. Patel is now the MP from Phulpur.
The Meerapur seat had been won by the RLD which mopped up almost half the votes polled while the BJP pulled in second with close to 37 per cent of the votes. The winning MLA, Chandan Chauhan is now an MP from Bijnore.
In Majhawan, the winning candidate with 42 per cent of the votes came from the NISHAD Party. The SP which came second polled just about 28 per cent of the votes while the BJP was in third place. Erstwhile MLA Vinod Kumar Bind is now the MP from Bhadohi.
