Delhi school blast: Investigation reveals traces of low explosives at site

Police say the white powder found at the site could be from a crude homemade bomb made with ammonium phosphate and other chemicals.

Initial investigations into the blast in Delhi’s Prashant Vihar have revealed traces of low explosives at the site, prompting Delhi Police and other security agencies to launch a thorough probe into the incident.

A loud explosion near a CRPF school on Sunday morning has sparked a security alert in the national capital. Though no one has been injured, several vehicles and properties were damaged in the blast.

Quoting officials, ANI reported that the white powder found at the site could be from a crude homemade bomb made with ammonium phosphate and other chemicals.  Experts from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) have collected samples from the site to determine the exact chemicals used.

"The white powder could be a mixture of ammonium nitrate and chloride. There was a foul smell of chemicals after the blast. Local residents and police officials who rushed there also felt the same. Our teams are investigating the entire matter," police said.

Besides Delhi Police, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the National Security Guard (NSG) are also investigating the case. According to reports, the NSG team has recovered a battery and wire near the blast spot and are investigating whether these items were placed before the explosion. 

Police believe that the blast was intended to send a message rather than inflicting damage as the suspect had chosen a school wall and morning hours to trigger the explosion. 

"The manner of the blast on the wall side and the morning timing suggest the intention was only to send a message, not to cause significant damage," an officer told ANI.

The investigators are examining the CCTV footage of the spot and collecting mobile network data to identify the suspect.
