Maharashtra Assembly polls: Will Ashok Chavan's daughter's candidature help BJP win Bhokar seat?

Former CM Ashok Chavan represented Bhokar while he was in Congress. Shreejaya has worked as Bhokar assembly segment chief

BJP candidate Sreejaya Ashok Chavan

Yet another daughter is slated to make her debut in politics during upcoming assembly elections in Maharashtra. It is none other than Sreejaya, daughter of former chief minister and now senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Ashok Chavan. Corridors of power were expecting this announcement sooner or later in the election season.

Sreejaya has been given a BJP ticket to contest from the Bhokar constituency in Nanded district. Interestingly, Bhokar was the seat her father represented as a Congressman. After he switched to the BJP and became a Rajya Sabha MP, the saffron party has given the seat to Shreejaya Chavan.

Born in 1992, Sreejaya is a law graduate. She was the Bhokar assembly segment chief of the BJP before and is an active member of the Sharada Bhavan Education Society in Nanded. The focus of her work so far has been woman empowerment, education and social issues.

Children of many Maharashtra politicians have taken over roles performed by their fathers. Former chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh's two sons--Amit and Dheeraj--are Congress MLAs. Former chief minister Sushil Kumar Shinde's daughter Praniti was an MLA from Solapur and is now a Congress MP from Solapur. Former Mumbai Congress chief Murli Deora's son, Milind, was with Congress and is now an MP from Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena. Eknath Gaikwad's daughter Varsha was a minister in the MVA government and is now a Congress MP from Mumbai. Senior BJP leader and former deputy chief minister Gopinath Munde's daughter Pankaja was a minister in Maharashtra in the Devendra Fadnavis government; she is now an MLC.

If elected, Sreejaya Chavan will join this long list of children of established politicians following in their parent's footsteps. Interestingly, Shreejaya's mother was also a legislative assembly member when Ashok Chavan was Congress MP from Maharashtra during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's first government at the Centre.
