The Supreme Court on Friday granted bail to businessman Amandeep Singh Dhall in a corruption case registered in connection with the alleged scam in the Delhi liquor policy.  Dhall was granted bail in the Enforcement Directorate’s case registered in connection with the alleged scam earlier.

Hearing Dhall’s petition challenging the Delhi High Court’s order dismissing his bail plea, the apex court observed that Dhall has been languishing in prison for over a year in connection with the probe. A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan granted Dhall bail considering the trial in the corruption case registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation is unlikely to end soon.

“The petitioner has been under custody for nearly 1.5 years. There are approximately 300 witnesses who the CBI proposes to examine and the trial was therefore not likely to be concluded soon,” the bench observed while granting bail. The apex court observed further detention of Dhall did not serve any purpose. The bench also directed the CBI to focus on conviction rates.

Dhall was granted bail subject to the terms and conditions set by the trial court. The Supreme Court directed Dhall to appear before the trial court on each hearing. Dhall was arrested by the CBI last year in connection with the probe into alleged scam in framing now scrapped Delhi liquor policy case.

With Dhall’s bail, all accused in the case, including former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, Aam Aadmi Patry leader Manish Sisodia and BRS leader K. Kavitha have got relief from Court in both ED and CBI cases. Arvind Kejriwal resigned from the CM post two days after getting released from Tihar prison on bail.
