National Conference leader and MP Syed Agha Ruhullah Mehdi has reached out to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah with a letter that lists steps to enhance the welfare of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Having won the Lok Sabha elections from Srinagar, Ruhullah played an instrumental role in shifting public sentiment in favour of the NC during the first elections in a decade.
His direct approach to pivotal issues like Article 370, statehood, and safeguarding the rights of the people regarding jobs, land and identity has earned him significant respect among the people.
In his letter to Abdullah, Ruhullah congratulated him on taking office and proposed several initiatives for the well-being of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
He expressed hope that Abdullah’s leadership would resonate with the aspirations of the people and honour their mandate.
Ruhullah underscored the urgent need to release prisoners held without trial, urging the government to prioritise this as a crucial step towards achieving justice and reinforcing the rule of law.
He also called for a revision of reservation policies to ensure they genuinely benefit deserving groups while preserving open merit, fostering a truly inclusive and equitable society.
The young MP has drawn Abdullah’s attention to the importance of swiftly filling government vacancies, which would not only create job opportunities but also help the local economy.
As winter looms, he highlighted the necessity of reducing exorbitant electricity tariffs. The rising power bills—exacerbated by the introduction of smart meters by the power development department—have become a pressing concern for many residents.
Ruhullah urged the government to ensure a reliable power supply during the harsh winter months.
Moreover, he addressed the excessively stringent verification process implemented by the police for applicants, calling it unfair to innocent individuals.
He recommended transforming this process to ensure fairness and equity for all. “The current verification process often punishes individuals for actions they did not commit. It is essential to reconsider this approach to make it just and fair for everyone,” he emphasised.
Ruhullah concluded with optimism, urging Abdullah to consider these suggestions as he strives to meet the expectations of the people. His message reflects a strong belief that under Abdullah’s leadership, there lies an opportunity to establish a progressive and just administration.
