Mystery surrounds death of a resident doctor in Bengal's Jhargram; body found in a hotel room

The resident doctor at Jhargram Hospital posted messages about threat culture in RG Kar Medical College before he was found dead

Dipro Bhattacharya

Months after the rape and murder of a resident doctor in RG Kar Medical College shook the nation, another resident doctor was found dead in West Bengal's Jhargram. The body of Dipro Bhattacharya, a resident anaesthetist of Jhargram Hospital, was found inside a hotel room, where he used to stay.

Though the cause of death is unclear, a syringe was found near the body of Bhattacharya. Initial speculation is that he committed suicide.

However, eyebrows are raised over Bhattacharya's last post in a WhatsApp group of anaesthetists of the hospital wherein he complained about how a section of teachers and doctors were soft targets of threat culture at RG Kar. Bhattacharya was posted at R G Kar hospital a year ago.

Local media reports add that he also accused many doctors of joining hands with perpetrators of threat culture and corruption to save their jobs.

Police sources also told Anaandbaazar Patrika that he sent several messages to his wife, urging her to start a new life. He also mentioned being burdened by "old sores" though he did not elaborate on what it was. His message to his wife also mentions RG Kar issue, the report added.

Though his wife tried to contact him immediately, Bhattacharya was unreachable over the phone. She alerted his colleagues whose efforts to get in touch with him too ended in vain.

However, his message about being troubled by "old memories" has triggered doubts about whether his death was in any connected to the RG Kar incident.

"The body of the doctor has been recovered. A postmortem examination will be conducted on Friday. A message was recovered from the mobile and we are also looking into that," Jhargram Superintendent of Police Arijit Singh told reporters.
