The Jammu and Kashmir government will soon enhance the ration quota and provide 12 gas cylinders annually to households as a New Year gift.
The announcement was made by Cabinet Minister Satish Sharma while speaking to reporters on Wednesday. “We have ensured all necessary arrangements for winter to ensure a smooth supply of essentials across the region,” he said.
He said that restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood is a top priority. “Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has personally met with top leaders in New Delhi to press for statehood restoration," Sharma said. "I believe Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also interested in restoring statehood. Once that is achieved, other pending issues will be addressed.”
He requested 11 months to address the "gaps and deficiencies" created over the past 11 years.
Regarding winter preparedness, Sharma stated that much has been done but admitted there are still areas that need improvement.
“Our officers are capable, but some deficiencies persist. These will be addressed soon,” he said.
He assured the public that essential supplies like food and fuel have been stockpiled in key locations to avoid shortages during the harsh winter. “We are prepared, but we must remain vigilant to tackle any unforeseen challenges,” he added.
This announcement comes as the National Conference (NC) government, led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, completes its first month in office. In this short time, the government has already fulfilled several promises.
With the proposed increase in the monthly ration quota, deserving households will also receive 12 subsidized gas cylinders annually, addressing both food security and rising fuel costs. The academic calendar has been revised to better suit the region’s seasonal and administrative needs, reducing disruptions caused by the harsh winters. Additionally, the age eligibility for combined competitive exams has been increased, providing aspirants with more opportunities to compete.
As part of its winter preparedness, the government has strategically stockpiled essential commodities in remote and snow-prone areas, ensuring that residents are not left without food or fuel during the winter. Furthermore, government offices have been shifted to Jammu for the winter months, facilitating smoother governance during severe weather in Kashmir—a practice that had been abandoned by the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha-led administration.
These initiatives reflect the government’s focus on addressing immediate concerns while setting the stage for pursuing the restoration of statehood.
