Empowered by the landslide victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led alliance in the Maharashtra Assembly polls, Prime Minister Narendra Modi came down heavily on the opposition and said those rejected by people are trying to disrupt and take control of proceedings in the Parliament.

The winter session of Parliament began on Monday. The house proceedings were adjourned till noon after paying respects to departed MPs. Members of the treasury bench raised ‘Ek hai to safe hai’ slogan when Modi walked into the Lok Sabha.

Earlier, addressing reporters ahead of the session, Modi slammed the opposition for disrupting Lok Sabha proceedings and said such “handful” of people were “punished” by people at the appropriate time. "There should be a healthy debate in the Parliament but, unfortunately, certain individuals are trying to control Parliament for their own political gains, resorting to disruptions and chaos," PTI reported quoting Modi.

PM charged, “Those who have been continuously rejected by the people 80-90 times do not allow discussions to take place in the Parliament. They neither respect the spirit of democracy nor do they understand the importance of people's aspirations.”

He added, "Though their tactics ultimately fail, the people watch their behaviour closely and deliver justice when the time comes.” Modi added the ongoing session is important as country will celebrate 75 years of the Constitution on Tuesday. The Centre aims to pass 16 bills, including the contentious Wakf amendment bill this session.

“Our new friends should get oppourtunity (to speak), they are there in all the parties. They have new thoughts to take India ahead. The world is looking towards India with a lot of hope,” Modi said.
