Cyclone Fengal Live tracker: Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema should brace for heavy rainfall, says IMD

Cyclonic Storm Fengal is likely to move nearly westwards and cross north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram with a wind speed of 70-80 kmph and gusting to 90 kmph during the evening of November 30, Saturday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its latest release. 

Meanwhile, Visakhapatnam received nearly 5 mm of rain on Saturday morning. Squally winds were reported from across the coastal areas of the state, while Tirupati district's Tada mandal received the most rainfall between 8:30 AM and 11:00 AM. Bheemulavaripalem of Tada got 37mm of rainfall, reports said.

Light to moderate rainfall across northern Andhra Pradesh including the Visakhapatnam region is very likely today, IMD said. However, isolated places in Rayalseema and the coastal belt are likely to experience very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall due to the influence of the cyclonic storm.

A storm surge of about 1 metre is expected in low-lying areas of coastal north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and southern Andhra Pradesh during the time of Fengal's landfall, the weather department said.

High alert in coastal Andhra Pradesh

"Very rough to high sea conditions is very likely over southwest Bay of Bengal adjoining areas of west-central Bay of Bengal, Gulf of Mannar and along and off Tamil Nadu-Puducherry, south Andhra Pradesh and east Sri Lanka coasts till 1200 utc of 30th November. It will gradually improve becoming very rough to rough till 1800 utc of 30th November," the IMD release said.

Fishermen of southern Andra Pradesh are advised not to venture into the sea on Saturday and those at sea were advised to return to the shores at the earliest.
