In a major strike, the elite anti-naxal force of Telangana police gunned down seven Maoists during a combing operation in the forest areas of Mulugu district on Sunday. According to police, key leaders of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) were killed in the operation.
According to Telangana police, an area domination exercise was being conducted by its anti-naxal unit, Telangana Greyhounds, in Eturnagaram forest area of Mulugu district on Sunday. The combing operation was launched after the militants recently killed two tribals allegedly claiming them to be tribal informers.
During the operation, the commandos engaged with Maoists at the Eturnagaram forest area and seven members of the banned outfit got killed in the exchange of fire, police said. Police recovered two AK-47s from the place and are investigating.
The deceased persons were identified as CPI (Maoist) Telangana state committee secretary Kursam Mangu alias Bhadru, divisional committee member Egolapu Mallaiah, party members Mussaki Deval, Jamuna, Jai Singh, Kishore and Kamesh, Times of India reported.

Two tribals, including a gram panchayat secretary, were allegedly hacked to death by Maoists claiming them to be police informers on Thursday. The deceased were identified as Peruru gram panchayat secretary Uika Ramesh and Uika Arjun. The Maoists also left behind a letter after the murder. Ramesh was allegedly murdered for informing police about Maoist movements in the area.
Condemning the murders, members of tribal communities in the region took out a protest march on Friday and demanded government support for the families of the deceased. The tribals demanded action against the banned outfit.
