The Supreme Court directed the Manipur government to provide details regarding buildings burnt, looted and encroached upon in the state strife with violence. The apex court also sought details regarding the action taken against offenders.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar ordered the Manipur government to provide the details in a sealed cover. The bench also sought details regarding the owners of the properties.
“We also direct the state government to file the following details – buildings burnt; partially burnt; buildings which are looted; and buildings trespassed and encroached upon, in all these give details of name and address of the owner. The report shall also indicate the steps taken by the state government to ensure that the persons who have trespassed are proceeded against as per law,” Live Law reported quoting the bench.
The bench also sought details regarding weapons seized by security forces. The Court will next hear the case in January.

The apex court formed a three-member judicial committee comprising former High Court judges last year to oversee the rehabilitation of victims affected by ethnic violence. The Court also ordered former Maharashtra police chief Dattatray Padsalgikar to monitor the probe in criminal cases registered in connection with the violence. The apex court will next hear the case in January.
Close to 200 persons got killed and hundreds suffered injuries in the ethnic violence that broke out in the northeastern state in May last year. Violence broke out first in Manipur on May 3, 2023, when a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts to protest against the majority Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
