Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday met with Speaker Om Birla, urging him to remove derogatory remarks against him. This comes after the Opposition tabled a no-trust voter against Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar.
Rahul said Speaker Birla assured that he would look into it, adding that the Congress wants the House to run and the discussion should happen in the House.
The Congress MP was speaking about BJP lawmakers Nishikant Dubey and Sambit Patra alleged that Rahul had links to Hungarian-American businessman George Soros.
"Congress ka haath, Soros ke saath. Congress has relations with OCCRP, which gets all its funds from the US government and George Soros. Did Rahul Gandhi take money from George Soros for the Bharat Jodo Yatra?" Dubey had said.
Following this, on Wednesday, Rahul said, "No matter what they say about me, we want to have a debate on December 13," adding that the government does not want to discuss Adani.
In Rajya Sabha, Kharge slammed Dhankar, saying his actions have "hurt the dignity of India."
Clarifying that it is not "personal", Kharge said the Congress was compelled to table no-confidence motion. "We have already given a notice. The opposition is here to speak, standing together, on this sensitive issue," the Congress president said.
Pointing out that the Chairman left the opposition with no option, he said Dhankar gave them neither time nor space to raise critical issues in the last three years.
Kharge said the Opposition expects protection from the chairperson, but he "keeps gesturing to ruling party MPs to speak." He said Dhankar is trying to insult opposition leaders by schooling the MPs lik a headmaster. Calling the chairperson as the biggest disruptor of Rajya Sabha, Kharge said Dhankar is working like the Centre's spokesperson.
Both Houses were adjourned for the day.
