Tamil Nadu Weatherman says 'heaviest day to monsoon in a long time' as 13 districts declare school holiday

As many as 13 districts of Tamil Nadu should brace for heavy showers on Friday, December 13, as the deep depression in the southwest Bay of Bengal has weakened and changed direction, the Meteorological Department has said. Southern Tamil Nadu is likely to get the most rainfall today, the weather department was quoted as saying by local media. 

A holiday has been declared for schools in 16 districts and colleges in eight districts in the backdrop of the weather report. Schools and colleges will remain shut in Villupuram, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Thanjavur, Tirunelveli, Trichy, Ariyalur and Perambalur districts while schools have been closed in Theni, Karur, Cuddalore,  Pudukkottai, Mayiladuthurai, Salem, Dharmapuri, Thiruvarur, Ramanathapuram, Namakkal, Naga, Tiruppur, Madurai, Dindigul, Sivaganga and Virudhunagar distritcs. 

A holiday has been declared for schools in Puducherry and Karaikal as well.

Tamil Nadu rains today, Dec 13

Moderate rains are likely to persist across Tamil Nadu till Sunday, December 15. Today, moderate to heavy rainfall is likely to lash many places in the southern districts and a few places in the northern districts of the state. The weather department is expecting heavy rains in at least a few areas of the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Tenkasi, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts today.

"Without a doubt the heaviest day to Tamil Nadu monsoon in a long time. In almost all district one heavy rainfall recorded," Tamil Nadu Weatherman tweeted around 8:00 AM on Friday. "Every district has got heavy rains.Ranipet is pounded, which means Nandhiyar got massive run-off and Poondi dam is getting inflows close to 13000 cusecs. Water release will be increased to 12000 cusecs. Tenkasi - 300 mm+ recorded in Ayikudi and entire district which had poor NEM in one day it is going into excess," he said. 

Two bridges were broken due to the flood at the Courtallam Main Waterfall in Tenkasi district. Daily Thanthi said in a report that the floodwaters entered shops and other buildings in the neighbourhood. A video of the incident doing rounds on the internet caused a panic, the report added.
