Chennai rains latest news: Heavy rains have been lashing various places across Tamil Nadu since Thursday night. In the last 24 hours, the maximum rainfall of 500 mm was recorded in the Oothu area of ​​Tirunelveli district. Normal life was affected as many low-lying areas and roads were inundated due to the heavy rains. Schools and colleges were forced to declare a holiday in as many as 23 districts as many parts of southern Tamil Nadu continue to receive heavy showers.

The deep depression that was prevailing in the Gulf of Mannar and its adjacent areas has weakened into a low-pressure area, the Meteorological Department said. As Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are expected to receive heavy to moderate rainfall till Sunday, here are five latest updates that you don't want to miss.

1. The Chembarambakkam lake is filling up rapidly due to heavy rains, Tamil media reports said. A flood warning has been issued for people living along the banks of the Thirumudivakkam and Nandambakkam areas and those residing along the banks of the Adyar river. The Chembarambakkam lake is brimming with 23.29 feet of water as 1,000 cubic feet per second is being released as of 8 am today.

2. Tiruvallur district's Poondi Sathyamoorthy Sagar Reservoir, one of the main water sources supplying drinking water to Chennai, is brimming with water. The total height of the reservoir is 35 feet with a total capacity is 3231 million cubic feet. On Friday morning, the water at the reserve stood at 34.05 feet and with 2,839 million cubic feet, news reports said.

3. Heavy rains caused flooding in residential areas of Mohammed Ali Street, K.T.C., Nagar Keelanatham in Tirunelveli Town, Dinamalar said in a report. The entire road of the exhibition hall near Tirunelveli Town was submerged in water, the report added. 1500 cubic feet of water is being released from the Papanasam and Manimutharu dams of the district.

4. In Puducherry, a flood warning has been issued for villages along the banks of the Thenpennaiyar and Sankaraparani rivers as excess water is being released from the Sathanur and Veedur dams and the Usudu lake. As a precaution, the National Disaster Response Force has been urgently called in and put on standby, media reports said.

5. The Chennai Meteorological Department had said that the deep depression that had formed in the southwest Bay of Bengal along the Sri Lankan coast the day before yesterday was present in the Gulf of Mannar and its adjoining areas since yesterday. It is likely to move in a west-northwesterly direction, gradually weaken and form a depression over the southern Tamil Nadu areas. As a result, heavy rains will be experienced in various places in southern Tamil Nadu districts including Nellai, Tenkasi, and Thoothukudi since early morning yesterday.
