To improve traffic management and spot violators, the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) has been introduced in Srinagar, as part of the Smart City Project.
The ITMS helps watch traffic conditions on the roads of Srinagar, make them safer and identify people who break traffic rules.
The sensor-based system allows real-time monitoring of all types of vehicles.
It uses hi-tech cameras to spot and record different traffic violations, such as running red lights, speeding, using mobile phones while driving, and riding without helmets.
Offenders will receive fines, or e-challans, sent directly to their homes.
According to SSP Traffic Srinagar, Muzaffar Ahmad Shah, the system is already working at 20 major intersections.
The ITMS uses a network of 1,050 cameras connected to a central control room, providing real-time monitoring and swift responses to traffic incidents.
The smart traffic lights change their timings based on live traffic data, helping to reduce congestion and wait times.
The officials have said they expect drivers to need time to adjust to the system, and are available for support in getting used to the new technology.
With the ITMS, Srinagar aims to take the lead in setting a standard in smart urban traffic management and improving the efficiency of the city’s transport network.
According to estimates, more than 5 lakh vehicles ply on the roads of Srinagar. More traffic from districts including those ferrying tourists adds to the traffic congestion on the roads. Of late, the city has also witnessed accidents involving inexperienced or underage drivers. There have been cases where juveniles without a licence have been found involved in fatal accidents. The authorities have warned that parents allowing their underage children to drive vehicles on the road will be fined and serve jail terms.
