‘Delhi schools victims of own students’: Police probe into bomb threat spree in national capital leads to students fearing exams

The Delhi police’s probe into a spree of bomb threats to schools in the national capital has led them to students wanting to shut schools fearing examinations. The police probe into a series of bomb threat emails to Delhi schools has confirmed that students were behind hoax threats sent to at least three schools in the national capital.

According to police, students who wanted to postpone examinations or get the school closed for a day were behind the hoax threats. Delhi police said the bomb threat email received by Venkateshwar Global School in Rohini was actually sent by two siblings studying at the school to get examinations postponed. The school received the threat a day after the November 28 blast near PVR Multiplex in Prashant Vihar.

Similarly, police traced hoax bomb threat emails received by two more schools located in Rohini and Paschim Vihar to students of respective schools. The students wanted to get the schools shut for the day, police said.

Considering they are students, police let them go after counselling the wards and warning their parents. The students reportedly got the idea from previous incidents of bomb threats being made to schools, police said.

Over 100 schools in the national capital received bomb threat emails within a span of two weeks. In one instance, 44 schools received bomb threat emails and they were found to be hoaxes. The national capital was on high alert during such instances and Delhi police, fire services and bomb detection squads conducted thorough checks of school premises.

Police are facing difficulties in locating the perpetrators as the emails were sent using  Virtual Private Network. PTI reported that since May this year, more than 50 bomb threat emails have targeted not only schools but hospitals, airports and airline companies in Delhi.
