Maharashtra police have booked a 22-year-old murder accused for hurling a slipper at a sessions court judge in Thane while hearing his plea. The accused was reportedly irked by his lawyer’s absence during the hearing.

According to police, Kiran Santosh Bharam (22), was arrested by Thane police in connection with a murder case and he was produced before  District and Additional Sessions Judge R.G. Waghmare on Saturday. While hearing the case, Bharam requested the judge to transfer his plea to a different court.

The sessions court judge directed the accused to file a fresh plea for transferring the case. However, when the bench called out the name of his lawyer, he did not appear and was absent in the courtroom. The judge advised the accused to give the name of another lawyer to represent him and was given a fresh date for the hearing.

However, taking everyone by surprise, Bharam bent down, pulled out his slipper and hurled it in the judge's direction, police said. The slipper did not hit the judge and instead hit a wooden frame in front of his desk and fell by the side of the bench clerk, police said.

Police immediately booked a case against the accused under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 132 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 125 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) for the act.
