Gnanasekaran, the man accused of sexually assaulting a second-year college girl on the Anna University campus on December 23, had the video clips of several women on his mobile phone, the investigation team found out. However, ahead of his arrest by the Chennai Police, Gnanasekaran had managed to delete them all, they added.
Gnanasekaran, a biryani seller, was summoned by the police soon after the survivor filed a complaint on December 24. However, he was let go along with a bunch of other men due to the lack of conclusive evidence. Understanding where things were headed, the 37-year-old quickly deleted all video clips that could land him in trouble before the police came knocking again on Christmas day, DT Next said in a report.
However, following his arrest, the police understood that there were more videos of women on his phone and the cyber lab team is in the process of recovering them, the news report quoted the police as saying.
Chennai Police Commissioner A Arun clarified that if evidence was found in his phone confirming that Gnanasekaran was involved in other sexual crimes, the police would be reaching out to survivors.
The Kotturpuram All Women Police Station has reportedly booked the accused under eight sections including 63 (a), 64 (1) (rape), 75 (1) (sexual harassment), 127 (2) of BNS (wrongful confinement), 351 (3) (criminal intimidation) and sections 67 and 67 (A) of Information Technology Act.
Anna University girl's resilience to file police complaint catches accused off-guard
The accused shot videos of the young woman and her boyfriend together before approaching them. He threatened the duo that he would hand it over to college authorities and her father if she didn't do as asked.
When the girl didn't budge, Gnanasekaran allegedly sexually assaulted her and recorded it on his mobile phone. He then took her phone number and threatened to send the video to her father if she failed to meet him when asked.
However, things didn't pan out as he thought as the resolute girl filed a police complaint the following morning and told the women personnel about his blackmail using the video recordings. This resulted in the probe team thoroughly checking his phone following his arrest on December 25.
